Ground state properties of a one - dimensional condensate of hard core bosons in a harmonic trap

چکیده
The exact N-particle ground state wave function for a one-dimensional con-densate of hard core bosons in a harmonic trap is employed to obtain accurate numerical results for the one-particle density matrix, occupation number distribution of the natural orbitals, and momentum distribution. Our results show that the occupation of the lowest orbital varies as N 0.59 , in contrast to N 0.5 for a spatially uniform system, and N for a true BEC.

One of the most interesting properties of boson gases is that under special conditions, there is a possibility of a phase transition, in a critical temperature below which all bosons condensate into the ground state. This phenomenon is called Bose – Einstein Condensation (BEC). In this paper, we investigate BEC in a harmonic oscillator trap. We conclude that, in contrast to a free boson ga...
متن کاملThe Role of Dimensionality in the Stability of a Confined Condensed Bose Gas
We study analytically the ground–state stability of a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in an harmonic trap with repulsive or attractive zero–range interaction by minimizing the energy functional of the system. In the case of repulsive interaction the BEC mean radius grows by increasing the number of bosons, instead in the case of attractive interaction the BEC mean radius decreases by in...
متن کاملNatural Orbitals and BEC in traps, a diffusion Monte Carlo analysis
We investigate the properties of hard core Bosons in harmonic traps over a wide range of densities. Bose-Einstein condensation is formulated using the one-body Density Matrix (OBDM) which is equally valid at low and high densities. The OBDM is calculated using diffusion Monte Carlo methods and it is diagonalized to obtain the “natural” single particle orbitals and their occupation, including th...
متن کاملQuantum-Monte-Carlo Calculations for Bosons in a Two-Dimensional Harmonic Trap
Path-Integral-Monte-Carlo simulation has been used to calculate the properties of a two-dimensional (2D) interacting Bose system. The bosons interact with hard-core potentials and are confined to a harmonic trap. Results for the density profiles, the condensate fraction, and the superfluid density are presented. By comparing with the ideal gas we easily observe the effects of finite size and th...

The fermion sign problem is studied in the path integral formalism. The standard picture of Fermi liquids is first critically analyzed, pointing out some of its rather peculiar properties. The insightful work of Ceperley in constructing fermionic path integrals in terms of constrained world-lines is then reviewed. In this representation, the minus signs associated with Fermi-Dirac statistics a...
